Research shows that children who are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are significantly more likely to struggle academically throughout their educational journey.

YMCA Reads! is the Alliance's statewide literacy mentoring program designed to help elementary students build the foundational reading skills they need to succeed in school and in life. For more than 20 years, YMCA Reads! has partnered with local YMCAs, schools, volunteers, and community organizations to provide differentiated, evidence-based literacy instruction, caring adult mentors, and engaging learning experiences for students who are reading below grade level. The program primarily serves students in kindergarten through fourth grade attending Title I schools, helping them strengthen phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence through individualized support.
Research shows that children who are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are significantly more likely to struggle academically throughout their educational journey. YMCA Reads! was created to address this challenge by combining high-quality literacy curriculum with the power of mentoring and positive relationships. Students receive consistent support from trained volunteers and YMCA staff who encourage a love of reading while helping them develop the skills needed to become successful, lifelong learners.

The Florida State Alliance of YMCAs provides statewide leadership, training, technical assistance, curriculum support, program evaluation, and quality assurance to local YMCA Reads! sites across Florida. Using evidence-based instructional resources, data-driven coaching, and continuous program improvement, the Alliance works alongside local YMCAs to ensure students receive high-quality literacy interventions that produce meaningful outcomes. Local YMCA staff collaborate closely with schools, teachers, and families to identify students who will benefit most from the program and to monitor academic growth throughout the year.
Beyond improving reading skills, YMCA Reads! helps students develop confidence, strengthen social-emotional skills, and build meaningful relationships with positive adult mentors. Volunteers play a vital role in the program by serving as reading mentors who provide encouragement, consistency, and individualized attention that helps children believe in their own potential. These relationships often extend far beyond academics, creating lasting impacts on children's confidence, motivation, and overall well-being.

Today, YMCA Reads! operates at 29 sites across 11 counties in Florida, bringing together educators, volunteers, families, community partners, and local YMCAs around one shared goal: ensuring every child has the opportunity to become a successful reader. Through innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to educational excellence, the Florida State Alliance of YMCAs is helping close literacy gaps, strengthen communities, and empower the next generation of learners.
