The Florida State Alliance of YMCAs serves as a Regional Partner for the New Worlds Reading Initiative, helping connect eligible Florida families with free literacy resources that support reading success at home. In partnership with the University of Florida Lastinger Center for Learning, the Alliance works alongside local YMCAs to increase awareness of the program, assist families with enrollment, and provide engaging community events that promote a love of reading and lifelong learning.

Since joining the initiative during the 2023-2024 program year, the Florida State Alliance of YMCAs has served more than 50,000 children and family members through literacy-focused outreach and engagement efforts. Each year, the Alliance coordinates 160 parent workshops and community literacy events across all Florida counties,  creating welcoming spaces where families can learn about the New Worlds Reading Initiative while participating in fun, educational activities together.

These events are designed to remove barriers to participation by providing families with a free meal, children's books, literacy resources, and hands-on learning opportunities. Families receive information about the New Worlds Reading Initiative, eligibility requirements, and personalized enrollment assistance to ensure they can access the program's free books and reading supports. By meeting families where they are—in their local communities—the Alliance helps ensure more children have access to high-quality literacy resources beyond the classroom.

The New Worlds Reading Initiative is a free statewide program that supports Florida students by providing eligible VPK through fifth-grade children with books and reading activities delivered directly to their homes. As a trusted statewide partner, the Florida State Alliance of YMCAs helps bridge the gap between families and these valuable resources by building relationships with schools, community organizations, libraries, and local YMCAs to expand awareness and participation.

Through collaboration, outreach, and family engagement, the Florida State Alliance of YMCAs is helping strengthen early literacy across Florida. By empowering parents and caregivers with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to support reading at home, the Alliance is creating stronger readers, stronger families, and stronger communities—one event, one family, and one child at a time.
